Luncheon Series

History and Purpose

The Truman Club was formed when esteemed State Senator Albert Rodda was unexpectedly defeated by rightwing firebrand John Doolittle. Local Democrats decided to form a club that could raise funds to help Democratic office holders and office seekers. The founders included a diverse group of Democrats and Labor leaders in the region. They ultimately named the organization the Harry Truman Democratic Club.

The Club committed to meeting regularly. The meetings are the backbone of the Club. They provide a way to bring Democrats together in a collegial setting, to raise money for candidates, to share ideas, and to keep each other informed about political developments. The center piece of the meeting is the speaker.

The speaker’s role is to inform, entertain and inspire Club members and to foster discussion and debate. Members are provided the opportunity to ask questions of the speaker and share their thoughts (albeit in concise fashion).

Speakers Committee

The Speakers Committee is tasked with lining up speakers for the Club year. In picking speakers for a given year the Committee looks for a diverse group of individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, expertise and positions. In this way it is hoped that the speakers will provide a real mix of experience, view points and knowledge to our community.

Our Speakers

In recent years our speakers have included office holders, candidates, labor leaders, law professors, and political cartoonists. They range from Assembly Member Maggie Krell (Who’s bill was just signed into law), Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty, Political Cartoonist Jack Ohman, California Labor Federation President Lorena Gonzalez, Congressional Candidate Jessica Morse, UCD Davis King Hall Law Professor Aaron Tang and County Sheriff Jim Cooper

Our next speaker will be Congressman Ami Bera. Following that we hope to have former California Attorney General and former Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

We hope you will join us at the next Truman Club luncheon. We have great food, a convivial atmosphere, a wonderful group of committed and friendly Democrats, and great Speakers. After experiencing lunch we hope you will join us, become a sponsor and help elect and retain Democratic office holders in our region.
